We know of 4 events of note in literature and the arts that occurred on August 11:
  • British author Angus Wilson was born on this day in 1913.
  • On this day in 1937, Ernest Hemingway confronted Max Eastman in the offices of Scribner's on Fifth Avenue. Because Eastman had cast aspersions on Hemingway's macho persona, Hemingway penned him on the floor, exposed Eastman's hairless chest, then exposed his own hairy one and laughed.
  • Shakespeare's son, Hamnet, was buried on this day in 1596, at the age of 11.
  • The author of Roots and co-author of The Autobiography of Malcolm X Alex Haley was born on this day in 1921.
