We know of 4 events of note in literature and the arts that occurred on November 24:
  • Charles Darwin's Origin of Species was published on this day in 1859.
  • French painter of the demimonde Henri Toulouse-Lautrec was born on this day in 1864. He made the Moulin Rouge near the Place Pigalle famous.
  • The author Laurence Sterne was born on this day in 1713. His novel Tristram Shandy is one of the oddest yet most delightful novels in the language, defying the traditions of fiction. Dr. Johnson did not like him. When a woman asked him if Sterne was such a poor writer, then why did she like him so much. He answered, "Because, Madam, you are a dunce.".
  • The Jewish-Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza was born on this day in 1632. He was one of the seminal minds of the 17th century.
